How to Make Your Flowers Last Longer: Care Tips from Elaine’s Florist

At Elaine’s Florist, we know how much joy a beautiful bouquet or elegant flower arrangement can bring to your home. With a little care, you can extend the life of your flowers and keep them vibrant for days. Here are some of our favorite tips to help you get the most from your roses, house plants, and all types of fresh blooms.

  1. Start with a Clean Vase
    • Before arranging your flowers, make sure the vase is clean. Bacteria can quickly shorten the lifespan of your flower arrangement, so thoroughly wash your vase with warm, soapy water to create a fresh, bacteria-free base.
  2. Trim the Stems
    • Trim about one inch off the stems at a 45-degree angle. This angle increases the surface area for water absorption, keeping your roses and other flowers well-hydrated. Re-trim the stems every few days for the best results.
  3. Use Fresh, Cool Water
    • Fill your vase with cool, fresh water, and change it every two days to prevent bacteria buildup. Adding flower food can also provide essential nutrients, extending the vibrancy of your arrangement.
  4. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat
    • Keep your flower arrangements away from direct sunlight, heaters, and drafty areas. Excessive heat can cause flowers to wilt quickly, while cold air can make them lose their freshness. Instead, place them in a cool area where they can thrive.
  5. Remove Wilting Flowers Promptly
    • If any flowers in the arrangement start to wilt, remove them to keep the rest fresh. Decaying flowers can release ethylene gas, which speeds up the wilting process for nearby blooms.
  6. Mist for Extra Hydration
    • For house plants and floral arrangements with leaves, misting the petals and leaves lightly can help maintain moisture.

With these simple care tips from Elaine’s Florist, you can enjoy your roses and flower arrangements longer and keep your home bright and fragrant.
